Sunglasses and Snakes

There is this film
When I see it, it reminds me of you
Of sitting in a darkened theatre with you
Idly passing another weekend afternoon
Not really paying much attention
To the film as I was to how badly
I wanted, I needed
Just to touch your hand
As the rain fell outside
In the theatre, we were warm and dry
I, the young woman; you, the young man

There is this taste
When I taste it, it reminds me of you
Of late night spent listening to you
Up late watching TV until the a.m.
Wanting to savor the night to its very end
Waiting to start a new day
Then in to bed
As the morning
Rose like smoke through the trees
Sleeping soundly so you could
Arise to greet me when my day was at its end

There is this song
When I hear it, it reminds me of you
I left and I didn’t want to leave you
Hope all but left me that night
You just sat there while I packed
Had I known it was
The last
Time I’d ever see you
Of all the feelings in that room
Your feelings were the only ones I cared about
Life was so complex back then

There is this smell
When I smell it, it reminds me of you
For a long time I thought it was all you
Then one day, I smelled something familiar
All at once I was taken back to those days
I smelled your sweetness
In a box
Of laundry soap
But, when I dried my clothes
And pressed them to my own skin
They never smelled the same
