Breathing Underwater

As I sink into the muddy undercurrent that is you…
I gasp for breath in fits, knowing full well that I breathe best when filled with you…
Swimming, swooning; I survey the path before me…
Staring you down like prey…

For a moment you are mine…
We heave and we struggle…
Neither one of us relenting…
Neither one of us giving anything up…
But then, all at once, I see it in your eyes…
My soul escapes me…
I turn towards the light...
And surface…
