The Tattoo
Story

:::This original piece is on my left arm. At this point I was
good friends with my tattooist Turdbo, and his girlfriend Sarah.
It was about my 7th tattoo. I had a largish tattoo on my left
arm, and felt I needed ‘balancing’. Sarah and I decided
that I needed another fairy tattoo. I have long loved Amy Brown’s
fairies, I already had one tattooed on my right ankle, so we thought
it would be a good idea to choose one of hers, but we were struggling
to find the ‘right’ one for my arm. I was torn between
three different ones. ‘Wild Violet’, ‘Shy Violet’
and ‘Periwinkle’. I liked the wings on ‘Periwinkle’
but not her feet, I liked the body of 'Wild Violet’ but
her wings were too small, and would have looked too small on my
arm. Sarah, suggested that we put the wings of Periwinkle on the
body of wild violet, and TADA, the fairy design was complete.
The design on my ankle had no black outline and I was really happy
with it, so I asked Turdbo to do the same with this design. The
resulting tattoo is pictured on the left.

:::I was never completely happy with the piece, my perspective
on what was a big or small tattoo was changing, and I felt the
piece looked lost on my somewhat large arms. Also the purple outline
didn’t work as well on this piece as on my ankle. Turdbo
who was only new to tattooing was nervous about putting in her
face, so I was left with a blank faced fairy, with no additional
skin tone for quite a while. The overall effect was not helped
by the fact that I had experienced an adverse reaction to the
blue ink in her bodice and it was left looking patchy and uneven,
without the definition that it needed.
:::My friendship with Turdbo ended and I was left with several
unfinished tattoos, and the need to find a new tattooist. I approached
Nick Green of Artistic Tattoo in Wrexham, who had previously tattooed
my lower back. He was happy to rework the fairy. After the 2,
1 hour sessions the improvement was dramatic and clearly noticeable.

:::I was now far happier with my fairy’s design, but I still
felt she looked lost on the expanse of my arm. Amy Brown had released
a new fairy, called ‘Foxglove’ and as soon as I saw
it I knew I had to get it inked on me somewhere. I discussed it
with Nick who suggested creating a fairy ‘dreamscape’
on my arm, adding foxglove above the original fairy.

:::After that we decided to add a dragon which I had seen on Nick’s
wall 2 years previously, when I went into his studio for the tattoo
at the base of my spine. The flash was in black and grey but I
suggested that Nick used his imagination and coloured it in using
colours sympathetic to the whole design. The result is the pic
new dragon. It is probably one of my favourite pieces I think
the coloured version looks so much more dramatic than the original,
and I had dreamed of the original for 2 years!!!

:::The final session was to have a big swirl
of fairy dust added to complete it. I had explained vaguely to
Nick what I wanted, but the book with the picture of what I wanted
was in storage and unavailable, which was most inconvenient.
:::Trusting Nick
and his talent I gave him free reign to finish the piece off in
the manner he felt would look best. I struggled not to look, while
Nick tattooed most of my upper arm for 2 hours. The bits close
to my underarm were very tender, and I had to ‘endure’
some bits, while other areas, particularly, the dimple in the
top of my shoulder, were almost ticklish!
:::Charlie, the
studio piercer, has a thing for pink in the same way I do for
purple, and when she saw the finished piece she was dumbstruck!!
See ‘my arm finished’ picture.
:::I am incredibly pleased with it, but I am thinking of adding
a little more, just to take it to my elbow, having always wanted
a tattoo that ‘peeps’ out of short sleeves.
